In our imagined story, a young explorer found a little lamp waiting beside a window. Its warm circle of light fell across a blank notebook. Outside, the evening grew quiet. Inside, there was just enough room for a question. The explorer put a pencil on the page and wondered where the light would go.
In Cairo, Ibn al-Haytham spent time under house arrest. He used that time at home to study light through hundreds of experiments.
The explorer drew a room with all its curtains closed. Then came a tiny hole, no bigger than a dot on the page. What might fit through it? A whole idea, perhaps. The explorer drew a line from the window to the opposite wall, and left a question mark beside it. This was a plan for tomorrow, not something to finish tonight.
Some thinkers said that eyes send out rays. Ibn al-Haytham tested this idea and explained that light reflects off objects and enters our eyes.
How could you test an idea about light at home?
