Sehî Bey

Also found as Sehî Bey · Sehi Bey · Sehī Beg

Sehî Bey was an Ottoman poet who helped preserve other poets’ lives and writing. In 1538 he completed Heşt Bihişt, a collection of short biographies and examples of poetry. His choices let us ask whose voices a collection remembers—and whose it leaves out.

Reference notes

TDV İslâm Ansiklopedisi · Sehî’s Heşt Bihişt

Reference note, paraphrased from Günay Kut’s TDV article: Sehî Bey completed Heşt Bihişt in 1538. It begins the Ottoman Turkish tradition of poet-biography collections, or tezkiretü’ş-şuarâ. Its introduction, eight sections and conclusion drew on earlier Persian-language collections. The sections include rulers, officials, scholars, earlier poets, contemporaries and emerging young writers. Some writers were known personally to Sehî; others were described using reports from older people. Entries give brief information about a poet’s background, education, occupation and writing, followed by example couplets. Many entries are short or incomplete, and the collection omits some contemporary poets. Surviving manuscript versions differ. This makes selection and source comparison useful topics for discussion. The X claim comparing Selim with Amir Khusrau is not independently checked here.

Türkiye Ministry of Culture and Tourism · Sehî Bey

Reference note, paraphrased from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism profile: Sehî Bey of Edirne was a Divan poet remembered for his anthology Heşt Behişt, rendered in English as Eight Paradises. The ministry profile associates the work with 1538. This identifies the same Ottoman literary biographer mentioned in the X post, rather than a scientist or the ruler whose poetry he discussed.

Research note: His work and its 1538 completion are corroborated by TDV’s account of Heşt Bihişt. The comparison between Selim I and Amir Khusrau remains an attribution made by the X account; it has not been checked against the original passage.
