Reference notes

TDV İslâm Ansiklopedisi · Al-Baghawī

Reference note, paraphrased from Mevlüt Güngör’s biography: Abū Muḥammad al-Ḥusayn ibn Masʿūd al-Baghawī studied Qur’anic interpretation, hadith and Shafi‘i law in Khurasan. His works include Maʿālim al-Tanzīl, Sharḥ al-Sunna and Maṣābīḥ al-Sunna. He organized inherited learning so later readers could compare related teachings. TDV gives his death as 1122 while noting 1116 as an alternative; his early life is poorly documented. Do not conflate him with other scholars called al-Baghawi or claim that every report in his books is established historical fact.

TDV İslâm Ansiklopedisi · Maʿālim al-Tanzīl

Reference note, paraphrased from Saffet Bakırcı’s article: Maʿālim al-Tanzīl is al-Baghawi’s Qur’an commentary. It discusses word meanings and grammar alongside verses, hadith and explanations transmitted from earlier scholars. Commentary shows how reading a text can involve comparing language, context and earlier interpretations. The particular interpretation quoted on X has not been independently located in an identified edition; keep it attributed to that post rather than presenting its wording as verified.

Research note: The X post cites Tafsir al-Baghawi. Identity and works checked against TDV; the precise quotation remains attributed to the post, without an independently checked edition or page. His death is usually dated 1122, with 1116 also reported. Do not confuse his Masabih al-Sunna with al-Tabrizi’s later Mishkat al-Masabih.
