Reference notes

Encyclopaedia Iranica · Abū ʿAlī al-Daqqāq

Reference note, paraphrased from Jacqueline Chabbi’s article: Abū ʿAlī al-Daqqāq was a Sufi teacher in Nishapur who died in 1015. He studied Arabic, hadith and Shafi‘i law and became known for public teaching. His student and son-in-law al-Qushayrī preserved many of his sayings in the Risāla. A school named after al-Daqqāq was established in 1001 and later became associated with al-Qushayrī. Much of his influence survives through students and later writers rather than a substantial book of his own. Comparing those accounts helps distinguish teaching, interpretation and later anecdote. The exact X quotation has not been checked against its cited edition.

TDV İslâm Ansiklopedisi · Dekkāk, Ebû Ali

Reference note, paraphrased from Recep Uslu’s biography: This is Hasan ibn Ali, the Nishapur teacher of al-Qushayri, not the earlier Egyptian Sufi Abu Bakr al-Daqqaq. His life connects religious study with spiritual instruction. His birth year is not established here. A quotation preserved by a student must not be turned into a claim that al-Daqqaq authored the student’s book.

Research note: Represented by a quotation in the X source. Biographical context checked against Encyclopaedia Iranica and TDV. The wording of the quotation has not been checked against a specific edition of al-Qushayri’s Risala. Distinct from Abu Bakr al-Daqqaq; he was a teacher quoted in the Risala, not its author.
